About / Governance
With the adoption of new Bylaws in 2011, the MMA replaced its traditional, county medical society based House of Delegates governance model with a General Membership model. In the new governance model, members have the power to elect the 30-member Board of Directors, Committee Chairs, and other positions, and to adopt an annual budget for the organization. The Board of Directors includes an Executive Committee of 8 members, including 5 officers (Immediate Past President, President, President-elect, Chair of the Board, and Treasurer) plus 3 at-large members elected from the Board. Members who wish to serve as an officer commit to a four-year series of roles beginning with Chair, Board of Directors and then progressing to President-elect, President, and Immediate Past President before retiring from the Executive Committee. The Nominating Committee considers volunteer candidates for all leadership positions and considers candidates for the MMA Board service on the basis of a variety of factors to ensure broad representation of the Maine physician community. The General Membership meeting takes place in September each year during the Annual Session.
