Complete Your Tobacco Treatment Specialist Training This Spring

Upcoming tobacco treatment training and education opportunities through the MaineHealth Center for Tobacco Independence.

 Advice and assistance from a healthcare professional remains a powerful tool for helping tobacco users quit and these patients should be offered assistance at each healthcare visit. The MaineHealth Center for Tobacco Independence provides a variety of tobacco treatment trainings and education programs for providers and health professionals. The MaineHealth Center for Tobacco Independence Training and Education Program is fully accredited by the Council for Tobacco Treatment Training Programs (CTTTP).  

If you are interested in obtaining Tobacco Treatment Specialist certification, there are two training pathways through CTI that you can choose from: 

Accelerated Tobacco Treatment Specialist Training:  

Complete all training requirements for Tobacco Treatment Specialist Certification within 1 month!   

Live Zoom Training Sessions: March 11-14, 2025      Registration closes February 7th, 2025 with pre-work available February 11, 2025  

Through a combination of interactive, virtual sessions and online self-paced training, the MaineHealth Center for Tobacco Independence Tobacco Treatment Specialist Program offers leading-edge, evidence-based education in a fun and engaging online experience. Participants can expect to leave the training competent to effectively treat patients for tobacco use disorder and to provide services that will help organizations to address tobacco use. Classic Pathway Training Offerings  

To fulfill Tobacco Treatment Specialist certification requirements, you must attend all three trainings in the Classic Pathway: Essential Skills, Intensive Skills, and Annual Conference.  

Treating Tobacco Together: Essential Skills Training  

In this training, participants will learn about tobacco prevalence, products and burden, e-cigarettes and vaping, motivational interviewing, how to integrate brief, evidence-based tobacco treatment interventions into current practice, tobacco treatment medications, and relapse prevention and recovery.

Treating Tobacco Together: Intensive Skills Training   

Participants will build on common counseling skills used in intensive tobacco treatment such as motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioral therapy, explore the value of a comprehensive tobacco use assessment, learn to develop effective treatment plans, discuss considerations for medication management, and review relapse prevention strategies.
