Reaccreditation Process

Guide to Reaccreditation

Every 2, 4, or 6 years, depending on the status of the provider, Accredited CME Providers must demonstrate how their programs have adhered to the Core Accreditation Criteria, Standards for Integrity and Independence, and policies set by the ACCME. The MMA’s Committee on Continuing Medical Education and Accreditation (CCMEA) conducts this process for providers they accredit in Maine. View the MMA Guide to Reaccreditation for more information.

The Accredited Provider will complete the Self Study narrative that describes their program in relation to the Core Accreditation Criteria and Standards for Integrity and Independence. They will also complete a Performance-in-Practice Structured Abstract (PIP) for 6 or more activities from their accreditation term selected by the CCMEA.

CCMEA Surveyors will review the materials submitted and prepare questions for an Accreditation Interview. The purpose of the interview is to provide a complete picture of the Accredited Provider’s CME Program.

The CCMEA Committee will determine the provider’s compliance with the ACCME Core Accreditation Criteria, Standards for Integrity and Independence, and policies. Possible decisions include:

  • Accreditation: All accreditation requirements are found in compliance.  The provider is granted a 4-year accreditation term.
  • Accreditation with Progress Report: One or more requirements are found to be in noncompliance.  The provider is granted a 4-year accreditation term but must submit a Progress Report within one year and demonstrate improved performance in the requirement(s) previously found to be in noncompliance.
  • Accreditation with Commendation: All accreditation requirements are found in compliance and 8 additional commendation criteria are found in compliance.  The provider is granted a 6-year accreditation term.

The Reaccreditation process begins one year prior to the end of the provider’s accreditation term. The CCMEA will supply each accredited provider with a timeline specific to their reaccreditation decision date.

If a provider is required to submit a progress report, a similar process to reaccreditation is followed but the progress report will focus only on those criteria or standards that were found in noncompliance. Progress reports may be given a length of 6 months to 1 year to complete. A specific timeline will be provided by the CCMEA.
